ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS: THE STORIES THEY TELL
Almost every country in the world, developed or otherwise lists cases of illegal immigrants trying to enter the country. Illegal immigration is often painted as a victimless crime but in truth, it causes substantial harm to citizens and legal immigrants, particularly those in the most vulnerable sectors of the population -- the poor, minorities and children.
In addition to the obvious socio-economic damages, illegal immigration also causes an enormous dent on public funds as the amount of taxes paid by these immigrants don't even begin to cover the services they receive. The quality of health, education and other services are undermined by the needs of endless numbers of poor, unskilled illegal immigrants.
Causes of Illegal Immigration
The reasons for the influx of illegal immigrants to a particular country is often described as complex and numerous. But generally, it is because people from poor countries want to seek better life opportunities in more developed countries. Illegal immigration after all is the migration of foreign citizens into a country in circumstances where the legal requirements for immigrating in that country are not met, and therefore violated just to gain entry into the country of their choice.
If you've ever travelled within your own country or overseas, you may have noticed the substantial amount of security assigned in the airports. This is in part, in compliance with immigration procedures, regulations and laws which includes ensuring that every individual who tries to enter a particular territory has the legal right to do so as ordained by national or state laws.
Other causes could also be attributed to the structural demand in developed states which may call for unskilled immigrant labor to fill undesirable job posts the native-born citizens don't want to take up, to escape the impoverished state of their home country, family reunification and to escape civil war or repression in their home country or region.
Human Trafficking
Illegal immigration cases can also result from instances of human trafficking which is the "recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraught, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose exploitation".
Because the victims are transported against their will and often illegally, they end up becoming unwanted illegal immigrants and there are many who continue to capitalize on the demand for cheap labor.
Instability
Financial instability is also another significant disadvantage of illegal immigration. As mentioned, illegal immigrants also avail of basic services like healthcare, education and law enforcement but the taxes they pay are not nearly enough to cover the expenses of these services. In addition, they also depress both wages for the native-born citizens with lower skills and the prices for all consumers buying goods and services.
Illegal immigrants also undermine national security, exploiting the job markets leading to a significant rise in the unemployment rates for the native-born citizens. The number of illegal immigrants documented by the government is more often than not undeterminable and therefore mess up any demographic data published.
Control
Illegal immigration is also almost impossible to control in countries and nations that have a high rate of immigration. In some countries the existing immigration laws are just not enough to stop the influx of illegal immigrants and are therfore, forced to come up and enforce more laws and regulations in a bid to control the illegal entry of immigrants from around the world.
